What Garage Cleanout Dumpster Rental Actually Covers

10 yard dumpster set at the garage door for a cleanout

A garage clearance is almost pure volume. Boxes, shelving and old furniture are bulky and light, which means you will fill the container long before the weight allowance becomes relevant.

Cubic Yards Decide, Not Tonnage

This is a volume job, not a weight job

Stored household goods run 150 to 250 pounds per cubic yard against an allowance of 200, so on a garage clearance the walls decide. A 10 yard holds about 3 pickup loads and a 15 holds about 5. Count the pickup loads you think it would take and size from there.

How It Actually Runs

  • Set at the garage door

Say where you want it and the driver places it there, not at the curb.

  • Paint has to be dried out

Tins dried solid with the lid off are fine. Anything still liquid is not.

  • Count the mattresses

They carry a per-item fee, and telling us at booking keeps it off the final invoice.

Questions

Garage Cleanout Dumpster Rental Questions

What size dumpster do I need for a garage cleanout?

A 10 yard handles a single garage that is normally full, and a 15 covers a double or a garage with the attic going in the same load. Stored goods are bulky and light, so this is a volume decision. If you can picture how many pickup loads it would take, a 10 yard is about three and a 15 is about five.

What cannot go in from a garage?

The usual catches are liquid paint, motor oil, fuel, car batteries and propane tanks, all of which are refused at the disposal facility regardless of who hauls them. Tires carry a fee rather than a refusal. The full accepted and prohibited lists are on the dumpster sizes and weight limits page.

Can you put it in front of the garage door?

That is where we normally set it, and it is the whole point of the placement. A container at the door turns every trip into a few steps instead of a walk across the yard. Say which bay you are clearing and the driver positions it accordingly.

What do I do with old paint and chemicals?

Paint dried solid with the lid off can go in. Anything still liquid cannot, and neither can motor oil, fuel, solvents or pool chemicals. Rhode Island runs household hazardous waste collection days for exactly this, and it is worth timing a garage clearance around one.

Will one dumpster be enough for a two car garage?

A 15 yard covers most double garages. Where people underestimate is the loft above, which often holds as much again as the floor. If the rafters are storing anything, size up rather than down, because a second haul costs more than the difference between two containers.
