What a 20 Yard Dumpster is for
A 20 yard dumpster starts at $525 and includes 2 tons of weight on a 7 days rental. It suits a roof tear-off, a whole floor of a house, or a renovation running across several rooms at once.
For concrete, dirt or sod, this is the wrong container at any size. Heavy material rides in the dedicated box, which is priced for it.

Capacity
What Actually Fits In It
Every figure with the arithmetic printed underneath rather than a number to take on trust.
- 7Pickup loads
Full-size truck, bed heaped rather than level.
A standard pickup bed is about 3 cubic yards, so 20 divided by 3 is roughly 7. - 175 to 200Contractor bags
42 gallon bags, filled and settled.
20 cubic yards is 540 cubic feet, and a filled bag settles to roughly 3 cubic feet. - 2 tonsIncluded weight
Weighed on a certified scale at disposal.
That works out at 200 pounds per cubic yard, the same ratio on every standard size we run.
The limit you reach first is rarely the walls
Space and weight bind independently. Furniture and bagged household waste run out of room first, so those jobs get sized on cubic yards. Plaster, tile, shingle and anything holding water run out of allowance first, and get sized on tons no matter how much room is left above them.
For concrete, dirt or sod, this is the wrong container at any size. Heavy material rides in the dedicated box, which is priced for it.
Past 2 tons, extra weight is billed at $145 per ton against a certified scale ticket. The full density figures sit on the dumpster sizes and weight limits page.

Questions
20 Yard Questions
How big is a 20 yard dumpster?
A 20 yard measures 14 feet long, 8 wide and 5 high, and holds 20 cubic yards. That is roughly 7 full-size pickup loads. It takes exactly the same driveway space as the 15 yard, because both are 14 feet long. The extra capacity is all in the wall height, which means you are loading higher rather than needing more room.
Is a 20 yard dumpster big enough for a roof?
By volume, comfortably. By weight is the question that matters. Asphalt shingle runs about 250 pounds a square, so 2 tons is gone at around 16 squares of single layer tear-off. A 20 square roof exceeds the allowance before the underlayment goes in. Tell us the square count and whether there are two layers, and we will plan it on weight.
Can I put concrete in a 20 yard dumpster?
No, and this is the expensive one to get wrong. Broken concrete weighs two to three times what household debris does for the same volume, so it passes 2 tons while the box still looks nearly empty and the load gets charged accordingly. Concrete, brick, dirt and sod ride in the dedicated heavy container instead, at $375.
